2015 IVSA Interdisciplinary Essay Competition

2015 IVSA Interdisciplinary Essay Competition

International applicants are invited to submit applications for Interdisciplinary Essay Competition – a national project of ELSA Greece & IVSA Thessaloniki.

ELSA Greece & IVSA Thessaloniki is looking forward to receiving your opinion on the topic of ‘Experimentation on animals for cosmetic and medical purposes’ within their Interdisciplinary Essay Competition.

Animal law; a course you are not most probably taught during your legal or veterinary studies. Although it tends to be a hot issue on media, most schools do not use to include it in their curriculum. It is definitely quite complicated to define legally the animals’ rights and it gets even harder when ethical, bioethical, scientific and other dimensions arise. This is the logic behind the selection of this topic. Students of two different fields decided to find a mutual point.

Undoubtedly, the experimentation on animals is only one of the many contemporary problems, which are connected with animal law. However, it is simultaneously one of the most important and controversial.

The main goal – among others – of this initiative is to raise awareness. Of course media help in sensitizing the society, but feelings should be combined with actions. And since activism is not represented by the majority of every state’s citizens, legal and scientific approaches should take place. Specialists work on such kind of issues with a more stable and powerful basis, but even students can contribute with their innovative ideas and arguments on the topic.

The idea of having an Interdisciplinary project is a source of our wish to produce multifarious results. To combine the sciences and allow the young students and researchers to ‘get out of the book’ of their school and work collectively and with various triggers. In addition, this is a reason why this national project addresses to students abroad. Pluralism and dialogue will reinforce the results. ELSA Greece & IVSA Thessaloniki is looking forward to your opinion!
