How Naija Writers’ Coach Is Changing Lives

How Naija Writers’ Coach Is Changing Lives

In the first half of 2012, I had 2 problems:

  1. Friends would daily ask me to teach them how to write. I found myself explaining the same thing to different persons at different times of the day. It was overwhelming.
  2. Whenever I won an essay contest, many associates would accuse me of not telling them which essay contest was open so that they could enter and win like me.

In each case, I was dealing with several dozen people. I’m just a single person and the pressure was much.

I had my passion – writing. I saw some felt needs – providing writing tutorials and updates on writing opportunities. I needed a way to carry everyone along without overwhelming myself. So, in the second half of 2012, I founded Naija Writers’ Coach.

For several weeks, it was a blog read by only a handful of persons every week. I was lonely. It was discouraging.

I’ve since gone ahead to win 10 writing prizes and publish two books: Your Right To Write, which has been downloaded by over 2000 writers, and Vertical Writing, which has sold many copies. My writing course, Write Well Challenge, has been taken by over 2500 writers.

Today, Naija Writer’s Coach is no longer about me. It’s become bigger than myself, larger than what I’d imagined. It’s a community of over 10,000 young writers – writing with passion, daring their fears, scooping away writing prizes and impacting the world.

Changing lives

Of the 7 finalists in the 2013 CIPMN Essay Competition, 6 are from this community and had conversations with me before their defense.

Of the 10 winners in the 2013 Ramadan Diet Essay Competition, 4 – including yours sincerely – are from this community.

Of the 10 winners in the 2013 TMC Essay Competition, 6 – including yours sincerely – are from here.

Of the 4 winners in the 2013 GIC Essay Competition, 3 – including yours sincerely – are from here.

The winners of the 2013 Young & Cerebral Essay Competition were notified yesterday, Thursday, 26 December. At least 2 of them – including yours sincerely – are from … where else if not this awesome community? 🙂

These are merely samples. A member of this community wins one contest or the other every week.

Every single day, I receive a few emails and phone calls from readers – thanking me, praying for me and flattering me about how my words have changed their worlds.

My dream for this community next year is tall. Most of you will:

  • Set up your own blogs or websites
  • Find your voice and confidence
  • Attract and retain loyal readers
  • Cart away amazing writing prizes
  • Write and publish jaw-dropping books

And to help you actualize those great feats, I’ll be staging some free courses on writing, blogging, publishing and making money as a writer. I’ll also be more generous with my words, and yes, money – that we may all grow together.

So be prepared to be blown off your feat, God willing. And don’t forget that opportunities are useless, unless you actually open your eyes to see them and act.

  3. Chizi Daniels says:

Yes! You’ve been a secret and silent mentor to me. When I first got introduced to Naija’s Writer’s Coach, it was a great shocker! I was like: so this has been on and I’ve been in the dark? ”I am just behind the scene” I said to myself!

Of course I had already published my first book [UNLEASHING THE GENIUS INSIDE] by then, but I was still so many steps away…

I followed almost every post, read a real handful of the articles and essay contests. I felt bad when I prepared for one, researched and wrote it. I submitted it and thought I was in, unfortunately my e-mail address barred my submission. When I got to know about it, it was too late! It was more than a disappointment.

But thank God for your website! Now, I’ve got my own blog: where I’ve started doing it too. I watched you write and reach out to young writers. I felt the passion and enjoyed every bit of it. Now it’s gradually robbing off on me.

My site is now growing, generating traffic and attracting readers. I want to say a big thanks to you Abdullahi. You are a great gift to our generation.

And to celebrate you and show you how grateful I am, I will write you a EULOGY and e-mail it directly to you. You can bet, I’ve improved a bunch these while…

    • Hi Daniels,

Thanks for reading, and your thoughtful comment. Congrats on the book.

The essay contest entry you were unable to successfully submit should not deter you. It happens. I’ve been a victim many times. And here I am. I’m still living, and scooping prizes. So don’t give in.

A eulogy for me? That would be awesome. 🙂

    • Hi, although it is not what is being discussed here, I went to your blog and I think it is pretty impressive what you are doing, but I have an advice. Try to reduce the length of your profile. You can still say a lot about yourself with the fewest words. The way it is, it is almost intimidating to read.

      Just my widower’s mite.

  4. keep the flag flying boss. You've really made a difference. FYI, I wrote on you in the Konnect Africa "Ï know a Nigerian Star" essay contest though could not make the final shortlist. Please keep on shining

  5. Nice one bro. A great opportunity. Thanks aplenty. I'm interested bro. Keep winning.

  6. Samuel Edet says:

Tho’ Feeling left out in the winning team, I still don’t wanna give up and I’d keep writing. I’m a different writer since I joined Naija Writers Coach. Thanks, Oxygen Mat. 🙂
