International Islamic Economics Essay Competition 2014

The Africa Islamic Economic Foundation is pleased to announce an International Islamic Economics Essay Competition for 2014. This competition promotes AFRIEF’s goal of providing a platform for the creation of knowledge, the dissemination and exchange of ideas and information for those interested in and concerned with Islamic Economics.

The Competition is open to everyone with an interest in furthering Islamic Economics education.

Describe an “ideal- future” for Islamic Economics where theory is balanced with practice. Compare this ideal future to the current state of global economic crisis, and recommend solutions and a way forward to narrow the ever-widening gap between the rich and the poor. Please tell us the perspective which you are writing from: Academic or professional, student, or under graduate student.


Africa Islamic Economic Foundation (AFRIEF)


Awards will be given to the first and second place finishers. Also, an award will be given to the best paper written by newcomers to the field of Islamic Economics. The latter award will preferentially be given to a paper written only by students; in that case the award will be called “Best Student Paper Award”. The program committee reserves the following rights: not to give an award; to split an award among several papers; and to define the notion of a newcomer.
First place finishers in each category will be invited to speak at the Annual AFRIEF conference to be held on the 25th-27thAugust, 2014, at the World Trade Centre, Accra, Ghana. AFRIEF will fully sponsor the invitation.

  • Academic or Professional: An individual who is working or who has worked as an economist or has been involved in teaching Islamic Economics or providing training in Islamic Economics (i.e., teacher, trainer, consultant)
  • A full-time or part-time graduate student currently enrolled with a college or university.
  • A full-time or part-time undergraduate student currently enrolled in a college or university.


  • Submissions must include a cover sheet with the author’s name and contact information, category (Academic or professional, Student, or Undergraduate student), the title for the essay, and for graduates and undergraduates, the name of the college or university which they are attending.
  • Participants must submit a short biography of 150 words or less. DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME ON THE ESSAY
  • Essay must be no longer than 3,500 (excluding endnotes and biography) words, and submitted double spaced using Times Roman, 14 point font size.
  • Essays must be submitted in the English language using Microsoft Word only. Essays must be original and not previously published.
  • Submission constitutes permission to publish in any form.

  • Award winners will be notified no later than 1July, 2014.
  • A panel of senior Islamic economists, comprising reputable intellectuals and professionals will judge all entries and select the winners for each category.
  • Essays will be evaluated on their relevance to the question, resourcefulness, and clarity of the argument, logic and coherence, evidentiary support, and the quality of the exposition.
