Second Annual Student Essay Prize On Neuroethics

The International Neuroethics Society (INS) is pleased to announce a call for submissions for its Student Essay Prize in neuroethics, which is envisioned to promote interest in neuroethics at an early stage in students’ careers. The Student Essay Prize honors two notable neuroethics essays written by undergraduate students. All current postsecondary students in any discipline (undergraduate, graduate, or professional) and any nationality are eligible and invited to submit a single-author essay.


Any topic in Neuroethics (e.g. ethical, legal, policy and social implications of neuroscience)

The benefits of having an essay selected as one of the top two scholarly essays include:

  • A $250 Michael Patterson Travel Stipend to attend the 2015 INS Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL (Oct 15-16), where there will be special network opportunities,
  • One year free student membership with the International Neuroethics Society,
  • Essay published in the Kopf Carrier (Newsletter of Kopf Instruments) as part of the “Neuroethics in Neuroscience Series” edited by Judy Illes (Director, National Core for Neuroethics, UBC),
  • Essay fast-tracked for peer-review if it (or a subsequent draft) is subsequently submitted to the American Journal of Bioethics Neuroscience (AJOB-N); separate submission would be required.


June 26, 2015 at 5pm ET


  • Essays should be single author, shorter than 2000 words (excluding references; necessary figures and images are permitted, but any captions count towards the word limit), double spaced, written in English, and should not have any identifying information (e.g., should not contain the student’s name); authors will be anonymous to the reviewers.
  • Students should include a cover page with name and contact information (address, phone, email), university, program affiliation, and year of study.
  • Each Student may submit only one essay
  • Students may submit an original essay or one they have written previously as part of a course.
  • If students submit an abstract to the INS meeting, they may also submit an essay here on the same topic.
  • Submission deadline isJune 26, 2015 at 5pm ET. Cover page and essay should be saved as a single file in the format “Surname_INS_Student_Essay_Prize.doc” and emailed to with the subject line: “INS Student Essay Prize”.
  • Essays will be judged on originality of argument, rigor of defense, and quality of prose; a short-list will be generated by the Student Essay Prize Judging Committee and the top two selected from the shortlist through forum discussion.
