SiteGround Website Setup Guide

SiteGround is a good web host, and they offer 24/7 customer service. Currently, they’re running a promo with 60% discount and they even give you a FREE domain name (some hosts sell a domain name for about N3,000/$15).

In this free tutorial, I share my SiteGround affiliate link and when you make a purchase through the link, I get a commission (at no extra cost to you) to support my work. But this didn’t influence my recommendation, because all hosting services have similar programs. I recommend SiteGround because I have personal experiences with them and believe they offer good quality.

Now the process, step by step:

#1: Get a hosting account with a FREE domain name from SiteGround

  • This is where your website “resides” online. Just click the SiteGround link to start.
  • When the page loads, enter your desired domain name (e.g., “awesomenaija”), choose the extension you want (e.g. “.com” “.net” “.org” etc.) and click “Search”. SIte Ground 2To make the domain name easy to remember, make it short and avoid numerals and hyphens. If the domain name you choose is available, the next page loads. If not, you’ll be told to choose another domain name.
  • The next page shows the three hosting plans SiteGround offers:

# StartUp: this is ideal for starters and the discounted price is N10,000 ($47.40) for the first year.

# GrowBig: this is ideal for fast growing websites and the price is N19,500 ($95.40) for the first year.

# GoGeek: this is the plan for the big web gurus and the price is N36,000 ($179.40) for the first year.

Just click “Order Now” under the plan you want.

  • On the next page, fill in your contact details, desired password and correct Mastercard details. Note that the zip code for Nigeria is 110001. You’ll notice the price shown is higher than $47.40 (N10,000). That is because the additional services, “Domain Privacy,” “Premium Support,” “Basic Backup Service” and “HackAlert Monitoring” are included by default. These extras are optional but I highly recommend them. If you can afford some or all of them, go ahead and pay N19,500 ($95.40). Otherwise, uncheck them and the price will change to N10,000 ($47.40).SiteGround 22
  • Finally, click “Submit Order”.
  • The next page shows that your order is successful. Click “Proceed To Customer Area”.SIte Ground 5

Now you have a hosting account and a FREE domain name. Congratulations! 🙂

NB: SiteGround would send you an email containing your login username. You’ll need that in the future to access your hosting account.

#2: Install WordPress on your domain name for FREE

  • After you’ve click on the “Proceed To Customer Area” link above, the next page shows the SiteGround Account Setup Wizard. This is a great self-help feature I love so much. Choose “Start a new website” and click “Proceed”.SIte Ground 6

NB: If you’re moving from another website host to SiteGround, choose “Transfer an existing website” and SiteGround expert engineers would help you move the site absolutely FREE. Note that you must request the transfer within 30 days after signing up for the SiteGround Hosting account. Otherwise, the transfer won’t be free.

  • The next page asks you the type of website you need and the software you need. Choose “Personal/Blog” and “WordPress” respectively. Click “Proceed”.SIte Ground 7
  • On the next page, enter your email, desired username and password. Optionally, you can choose one of the free themes displayed to be auto installed on your website. Scroll down and click “Submit”. Wait for few seconds for the installation to complete.SIte Ground 8

There you are! You’ve just installed WordPress on your domain name.

#3: Login to your WordPress site and publish your first post

This post doesn’t have to be perfect; it just has to be published. So go ahead and post any content. How?

  • Open a new browser tab and go to “” (replace “yourdomain” with your domain name). Login with the username and password you chose when you installed WordPress in step #2 above.Self-hosted WordPress
  • The next page displays the dashboard, which is the “back side” of your website from where you set everything that appears on the “front side”. On the left side of your dashboard screen are menus. Position the mouse on “Posts” and click “Add New” from the sub-menus that will pop out.Self-hosted WordPress
  • On the next page, enter the title of your post in the first tab and paste the content of your post in the second tab. Click “Publish”.

  • On the next page, click “View post” to see the post you just published on the front end of your website or self hosted blog as it will appear to your visitors.

Hurray! You can now start sharing links to your site with your family and friends in less than 30 minutes.

NB: The whole process above took me only about 9 minutes. But if you’re not yet familiar with the steps, 30 minutes or less is fine for you.

Fun fact: Minutes after opening my own account with SiteGround, they called me on phone, thanking me for using their service and offering to help if I have any challenge. How sweet!

Need help? If you encounter any challenge while following the above steps, you can give me a call on +2348182331125 or contact me on Facebook and I’ll be happy to help you, for FREE.
